iOS 17.4 Expands User Choice with Third-Party App Stores and More

Apple has released iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4, coinciding with the upcoming enforcement of the European Union’s (EU) Digital Markets Act (DMA). This update introduces support for third-party app stores and incorporates various changes mandated by the DMA. It’s important to remember that the DMA-related features are only accessible within the EU.

While the ability to install apps from alternative app stores and utilize external payment methods in the EU grabs the headlines, iOS 17.4 brings a variety of other improvements for users.

Expanded Functionality:

  • New emoji characters: Express yourself with a wider range of emotions and objects, including a lime, a phoenix, and shaking head gestures.
  • Podcast transcripts: Easily follow along with your favorite podcasts or catch up on missed episodes with the addition of transcripts within the Podcasts app.
  • Stopwatch Live Activities: Stay on top of your timed activities with convenient Live Activity updates for the Stopwatch app.
  • Enhanced battery health reporting: iPhone 15 users gain access to more detailed battery health information, including cycle count, manufacture date, and first use.

Additional features:

  • Improved stolen device protection: Enjoy increased security across all locations with the updated stolen device protection measures.
  • Messaging with Siri: Now, Siri can announce incoming messages in any supported language, keeping you informed without needing to look at your phone.

EU-specific features:

    • Third-party contactless payments: Banking and wallet apps from third-party developers can now leverage NFC services for contactless payments, offering more choice and flexibility within the EU.
    • Default browser selection: EU iPhone users can now choose their preferred browser as the default option in Safari, giving them greater control over their browsing experience.
